Audacity is Key-Patricia
Spears Jones--June/July 2008

The
heat broke this morning after a storm of noisy violence.
Cats were cowering from side of Brooklyn to the other.
But we welcome the coolness and the chance to walk
about and breathe without gasping. In a way, that
is how it feels to contemplate changes in the political
order in this country. A chance to walk about with
heads held high, with hearts relatively untarnished.
It feels good for a change to actually see a contest
that really shows two very different ways of looking
at and dealing with the challenges, the problems and
the ideals that this country has.See the complete
column here.

Inside a poet's life-Patricia

I
am not a native of New York, so the past 3 decades living
here I have had to reconcile cultural New York (how its
depicted in film, television and literature) with real
New York (what it means to get up five days a week and
get on the A Train to go to work). Does the city still
energize me, I am not so sure. That could be middle-age.
Or it could be the relentless pace that has gripped this
city, post-September 11. It is as if we are all running
towards some idealized material gain that blanks out the
huge wound that will always be in this city, no matter
how high the "Freedom Tower." See
the complete column here.
